Hydrogen-powered fuel cells for aircraft have been tested by NASA, running small planes on them for years of experimental trials. Planes would require a hydrogen fuelling infrastructure that does not exist now -- the same problem that has held back fuel-cell cars and the international shipping sector is now trying to address.
The IMO’s proposed Arctic heavy fuel oil (HFO) ban, scheduled to be finalised in November, has been run through the wringer by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) in a 38-page study detailing what it claims are the many loopholes in the proposed new legislation that aims to reduce oil spills and black carbon emissions in the Arctic, particularly as HFO use across the entire Arctic fleet was up 75% in 2019 compared to 2015.
IMO’s proposed HFO ban would cover only a fraction of HFO carried and used in the Arctic until exemptions and waivers expire in 2029, the study claims. ICCT analysis finds, had the ban been in place in 2019, it would have eliminated only 30% of HFO carriage and 16% of HFO use, and this would have reduced black carbon emissions by only 5%. ICCT has subsequently recommended eliminating or limiting exemptions and waivers to better protect the fragile Arctic region.

Transport choice has been the biggest factor in households' contribution to New Zealand's total carbon footprint. Better information on emissions in goods and services may shape consumer choices towards low-emissions options, given the role of households in driving up emissions generated primarily by modes of transport.
Statistics NZ found household transport emissions increased 15 percent between 2011 and 2017, leading to an overall increase in household emissions of 9.1 percent. The direct use of fuel by New Zealand households represented just over half of their total transport carbon footprint, while household utilities, which included the use of electricity, contributed 12 percent. Consumption has been rising since the recovery of the economy after the last global financial crisis in 2008, which accounts for much of this increase.
