Peter Nuttall

Dr. Peter Nuttall is the Scientific and Technical Advisor for the Micronesian Center for Sustainable Transport. He wrote his PhD thesis on the potential for wind energy for shipping in the Pacific and established low carbon shipping as a priority multi-disciplinary research theme for USP since 2012. He has published and presented regionally and globally across this field since. Between 2008-2012 he supervised the first village-based surveys of maritime transport and fuel dependency at village level in Fiji. Since then he has been involved in action research in low carbon transport from the village to the global, including the current IMO work on decarbonisation of international shipping. Dr Nuttall is also an acknowledged expert on the heritage of drua/kalia canoe technology in Central Oceania. With his sons he has built and operates the replica drua i Vola Siga Vou.  He has sailed extensively in the Pacific for 30 years and lives with his family on a sailing ship in Fiji which generates all its electricity renewably.
