The Marshall Islands ensured Pacific voices would be heard at today’s US Leaders Summit on Climate Change, with President David Kabua, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and 38 other leaders, including Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison, in attendance.

The Marshall Islands was invited as chair of the High Ambition Coalition while Fiji was being represented by Barbuda and Antigua, chair of the Small Island States.

The Ocean Conservancy claims US President Biden must fund the development of zero-carbon shipping fuels and zero-carbon ships, transform port infrastructure, developing onshore power that draws from renewable energy sources, and strengthen regulations for the shipping sector. 

The Environmental NGO emphasizes this is a path forward for the shipping industry that will allow for trade to continue around the world but not at the price of our ocean, climate and planet. They claim if his administration brings the shipping industry in line with its new Paris Agreement climate commitment, Biden will make the lives of people around the country better and pressure other countries to also act on ocean-based climate solutions.
