The UK is including international shipping and international aviation in the country’s sixth Carbon Budget, which covers the amount of greenhouse gases the country can emit between 2033 to 2037, is expected to be legislated by the end of June, firming up the country’s environmental commitments to reduce national greenhouse gas emissions by 78% compared with 2035.

It recommended that the UK’s carbon budget from 2033 to 2037 be set at 965m tonnes of CO₂ equivalent, which is about 63% lower than 2019 emissions.

US climate envoy John Kerry announced the United States will join an effort by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 in the global shipping industry ahead of a climate leaders summit hosted by President Joe Biden.

 

Kerry told the conference that the United States will help deploy the technologies needed to rapidly reduce the sector’s emissions, which he said are “known to us” be require investment to scale up.

The United States is expected to announce its new goal, known as a Nationally Determined Contribution, as soon as Wednesday ahead of the summit.

Carbon dioxide emissions are forecast to jump this year by the second biggest annual rise in history, as global economies pour stimulus cash into fossil fuels in the recovery from the Covid-19 recession, due in large part to coal use for electricity generation.

The leap will be second only to the massive rebound 10 years ago after the financial crisis, and will put climate hopes out of reach unless immediate reversed, warns the International Energy Agency.
