The University of Strathclyde in Scotland has developed a new rudder system as part of the €6m (US$7.2m) European Union-funded GATERS research project under the Horizon 2020 Fund.

 

Called the gate rudder propulsion and steering system, unlike a traditional rudder which sits behind a ship’s propellers to steer the vessel, the U-shaped gate rudder – essentially two separate rudders – sits astride the propeller which, as a result, acts like a nozzle around the propeller and generates additional thrust, showing  fuel-saving potential of 15% in calm waters and up to 30% in rough seas during early trial evaluations.

The gate rudder has been licensed to Wartsila.

Released as a European Investigative Collaborations Network documentary at the end of April, Black Trail examines "how shipping pollutes the planet, avoids taxes, dodges regulations, and gets away with it."

The film is a cross-border documentary by journalists at the The Black Sea and Expresso, Reporters United (Greece), RTS (Switzerland) and VG (Norway), co-produced by SIC TV (Portugal), with research support from Financed Uncovered (UK).

Micronesian leaders have received an apology from colleagues the Pacific Islands Forum, as Micronesia's leaders believed they had a commitment that their candidate, Gerald Zackios from the Marshall Islands, would be elected Secretary General. Henry Puna of the Cook Islands was selected instead, and the Micronesian nations exited the Forum in protest.

In a virtual meeting - the Troika Plus dialogue - apologies were offered by Papua New Guinea's James Marape, Fiji's Frank Bainimarama, Samoa's Tuila'epa Sa'ilele Mailielegaoi, and outgoing Secretary General Dame Meg Taylor.
