The chairman of A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S, Jim Hagemann Snabe, says it’s proving difficult to get enough women to apply for top management jobs after appointing a lone woman to its C-suite in 2020. In Denmark, home to Maersk, only about 14% of those employed in the industry are women. Maersk has set itself a number of targets across its organizational levels. This year, it wants at least 35% of its senior managers to be women. That figure was 30% in 2020.

 

It is equally important that Pacific Island Countries emphasize the role of women in the maritime industry and help foster equity to avoid broader labor issues and discriminatory policies.

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre reports that the canned tuna industry is rife with allegations of modern slavery in its Pacific supply chains, with little protection for workers from forced labor. The Covid-19 pandemic has also heightened the risk for workers of experiencing modern slavery. New Zealand and other countries have been urged by the Centre to legislate against products made using forced labor.

UK Maritime minister Robert Courts said shipping could be included to its existing emissions trading system on the path to full decarbonization of the transport sector by 2050. Other nations, including China and the US, are also looking at how Europe goes about regulating shipping emissions before embarking on their own potential maritime emissions schemes.
