Japan’s International Maritime Organization (IMO) delegation is set to call for a mandatory shaft power reduction on all ships to help meet its commitment to cut shipping emissions by 40% by 2030.
A proposal, seen by The Loadstar but not yet made public, entails retro-fitting engine power limitation (EPL) systems on all non-EEDI 3-certified vessels.

The Marshall Islands and other atoll countries in the Pacific will be the first nations to face extinction as a result of global warming. Rising sea levels could wipe them off the map in a matter of decades. Endless floods will make them uninhabitable even sooner. But, for purely selfish reasons, the world should not let them drown; the Marshall Islands have much to teach us about adapting to climate change.

These days, of course, we've given up the sails for the brute force of fossil fuel engines. The modern shipping industry has sacrificed elegance — not to mention the environment — for volume, speed, and efficiency.
But those old sails may be coming back.
