Posted on - 2019-05-07Global shipowners face being forced to make “drastic” and expensive changes to their fleets because they have been so slow to curb greenhouse gas emissions, a senior figure in the industry has said. Philippe Louis-Dreyfus, president of shipowners Louis Dreyfus Armateurs, told the Financial Times: “If we have things imposed on us by the [International Maritime Organisation], it’s because we have not moved and been proactive ourselves.”

As delegates made their way this morning to the start of discussions at the London headquarters of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on how to reduce the industry’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions they were greeted by school kids inspired by the Swedish 16-year-old climate change actitvist, Thunberg, brandishing their own messages for urgent changes to the industry.
