Banaba Island Facing Severe Water Shortage

The Kiribati island of Banaba, 6km2 in area, 285 kilometres from Nauru, is struggling with acute need of water, sanitation and hygiene assistance. The island's two desalination plants are out of commission, awaiting repair for three months, and it's been almost a year without substantial rain. Children are suffering diarrhoea and skin diseases are rampant.

The island leadership is calling on Australia and New Zealand and the international community to respond to this crisis because they have the resources and capacity to do so.
