Transport Comprises 19.7% of NZ Emissions

While the agriculture sector was the largest contributor to New Zealand's gross greenhouse gas emissions in 2019, (inclusive of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and fluorinated gases) the inventory calculations found energy (including transport) comprised the remaining 42 percent (34.3 Mt CO2-e) of emissions, with transport making up 19.7% of the national GHG inventory total.

Of total emissions, 46% was carbon dioxide, 42% was methane, and nitrous oxide made up 10%.

Gross emissions were up on 2018 by 2% due primarily to emission increases in manufacturing industries and construction, and public electricity and heat production.
