Debate around Ban on Scrubbers Continues

The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) has released a report urging the IMO to phase out all scrubbers - previously a hotly contested opinion prior to the implementation of sulfur content regulations in fuel oil.

Scrubbers were only installed on three vessels in 2008, and now more than 4,300 are using scrubber systems in 2020. While reducing airborne emissions,  sulfur, hydrocarbons, and heavy metal are discharged into the ocean, without strengthened regulations around this process since 2008.
