Ship Ranking System Aims to Improve Transparency around Efficiency

‘A’ to ‘E’ operational efficiency ratings of every ship above 5,000GT will be made fully public, updated each year, which is being compared to allowing charterers to make selections in a similar manner to consumers buying home appliances. Supported by the Getting to Zero Coalition for improved transparency, claims for publicly available data are bolstered by the argument that failing to provide the needed information only serves to protect those ship owners failing to operate efficiently.

The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) says the move towards transparency is positive, but details are needed to ensure the data provided improves upon what’s already available through voluntary systems.
