"8th Continent" Research Station Design wins 2020 Grand Prix for Architecture

Lenka Petráková’s design concept for a floating ocean research and remediation station, called 8th Continent, has just won her the 2020 Grand Prix Award - a French architecture prize recognizing outstanding contribution to the industry - the nation's highest award for architecture.

8th Continent is designed with three glass forms emerging from an elegant spiral base, with the intention of skimming waste off the surface of the water and recycling plastics while deployed at sea. Petráková also planned the building to support ocean research projects and a range of secondary uses that will help clean our oceans and advance environmental research.
