245 lives saved by Fiji Navy in 2020

According to Commander Captain Humphrey Tawake, 245 lives were saved by the Fiji Navy’s search and rescue missions in 2020, and rescue cases largely arise due to sheer negligence and disregard of advisories during bad weather. This search and rescue area includes coordination with Kiribati and Tuvalu maritime areas, as well.

The Commander says when people are found floating out at sea, many require psychological support, which highlights the need for strengthened provision of mental health services in Pacific Island Countries.
