FreightFish was founded in 2017 in New Zealand, and has been exploring development of hydrofoil technology for cargo conveyance. They're currently expanding upon the 3 meter, 250kg proof-of-concept prototype which achieved smooth foiling flight and speeds in excess of 25 knots. They've developed a 1/5th scale prototype at 6 meters, 800kg, which they expect to reach over 40 knots. They are anticipating their production vessel will come in at 30 meters with a Cruising Speed of 100 km/h, and the capacity to carry 240m³ of cargo over a range of 4,000 km.
High-efficiency innovation in the Oceania region such as the work being explored by FreightFish will be key to decarbonization over the coming decade. Commercial viability and region-tested functionality will be a key element in the future success of firms such as this.
