Ammonia Fuel to be Commercially Trialed

NYK teams with JMU to commercialise ammonia-fuelled vessels

This represents an opportunity to demonstrate the viability and cost-effectiveness of ammonia as an alternative fuel, both in terms of capital and operational costs relative to existing fossil fuel systems and emerging alternatives (such as fully electric or hydrogen fuel cell-powered vessels.)

Gas turbines have been powered with 100% ammonia by Japanese companies' previous efforts, and other Japanese shipping companies (Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) are undertaking similar research and development activities.
