German firm Schottel has released a 500kW version of its Schottel Rim Thruster, the SRT-R, noting computational fluid dynamics have been used to optimize the blade design to minimize cavitation. Retractable to remove contribution of drag to a vessel’s hull, it can be oriented in a full 360° when installed and used as a transverse thruster for shallow water operation.
