First Electric Ferry in U.K. Launches

Setting sail from Plymouth in southwestern England, the e-Voyager, formerly fitted with a diesel engine, has been rebuilt for sea trials and emission monitoring before passenger service is slated to begin in April 2021. Designed by Plymouth Boat Trips and Voyager Marine in partnership with the University of Plymouth, the University of Exeter, Teignbridge Propellers, and EVParts UK, the e-Voyager is powered by repurposed Nissan Leaf batteries, supporting an electric motor and fly-by-wire controls. Three 22kWh chargers in Plymouth port’s Barbican Landing Stage will enable a full charge in three hours, charging overnight when berthing.
