Chinese National Emissions Reductions Targets Demand Response from Shipping Sector

Acceleration is expected by China’s maritime industry under new targets for CO2 emissions to peak by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. The R&D requirements for alternative fuel and improved designs are advancing at pace. UK class society Lloyd’s Register views the Chinese commitment as a major step forward not just for maritime but for the whole world.

“Maritime and the industry heavyweights are playing their part in supporting this transition. We are now seeing more and more design houses, yards and owners developing solutions across a variety of ship types,” Darley said.

Lloyd's Register is now supporting MCST's joint research initiative with Swire Shipping, Project Cerulean, and acknowledgement of efforts to decarbonize shipping in the Pacific Island Countries is noted.
