A Swedish consortium including KTH Centre for Naval Architecture, maritime tech developer SSPA, and Wallenius Marine is deploying the Oceanbird, a sailing vessel capable of carrying 6,000 vehicles. The Swedish Transport Administration funded the project from 2019 through to 2022. Though requiring delivery times 50% longer than current diesel-powered car carriers, the sail-based propulsion should see significant savings in emissions and fuel costs over each voyage.
