Academy Broadens Relevance in Maritime Fuel debate

The Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI) and Copenhagen Business School (CBS) are working towards criteria for sustainability credentials and certification methodology. Applying these criteria to assess the alternative fuels will also feed into a number of decarbonisation initiatives across the maritime and energy sectors, and SSI wants to engage with certification bodies to facilitate the development of a sustainability standard or certification scheme for marine fuels. (It is yet defined who will be approached, but the IMO, national registries, classification societies, and other stakeholders will need to be engaged.)

SSI falls under the auspices of the Green Shipping Project betweenCBS and the Centre for Transportation Studies at the University of British Columbia’s (UBc), launched in 2017 between 18 universities and 19 government, industry, and NGO partners funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
