The Pacific is being urged to use a commitment by the international shipping industry to reduce emissions as an opportunity to modernise its shipping industry.
Pacific island nations were instrumental in pushing for the deal which saw 170 countries at the International Maritime Organization commit to to halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 compared to 2008 levels.
Scientific and technical advisor at the University of the South Pacific, Peter Nuttall, told Tim Glasgow the Pacific can use this development as an opportunity to improve all aspects of its own shipping industry and lead by example.
