Marshall Islands plans to raise islands to escape sea level rise

Facing possible extinction from rising sea levels, the Marshall Islands is for the first time focusing on how to raise islands in this atoll nation.

"Raising our islands is a daunting task but one that must be done," President Hilda Heine said in an interview with the Marshall Islands Journal published Friday. "We need the political will, and especially traditional leaders' commitment, to see this through. That is why a national dialogue is planned to bring all the parties together."

Vanuatu banned single-use plastic bags, drinking straws and styrofoam food containers last July in a dramatic attempt to stem the flow of trash from the country’s coasts into the ocean. Residents have been surprisingly receptive to the measure, and lawmakers are now preparing to restrict more disposable products, making one of the world’s toughest plastic bans even tougher.

The Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition (CPLC) organized the world’s first international research conference on carbon pricing—the CPLC Research Conference—in New Delhi, India.

The Conference attracted participants from around the world and featured over 30 researchers that were selected via a competitive “call for papers” led by an international scientific committee.

The key takeaways included an emphasis on continuing to invest in the carbon pricing knowledge base and building platforms for further collaboration between the research and practitioner communities.
