Mining giant BHP is preparing for greater shipping environmental clampdowns once the global sulphur cap is out the way next year.
In a recent interview with The Australian newspaper, BHP’s maritime vice president Rashpal Bhatti said, “There may well be a carbon levy associated with bunkers from the IMO. If that is the case it will be a significant driver to bring down emissions from any fuel that’s used. And our competitors will obviously have to think about that too.”
Posted on - 2019-10-01The Marshall Islands is leading a coalition of six Pacific countries to clean up the region's shipping industry and get carbon emissions to zero by 2050 as part of a US$500 million partnership.
The Pacific Blue Shipping partnership was announced on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly with the Marshall Islands, Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Samoa and Tuvalu agreeing to cut carbon emissions in shipping by 40 per cent by 2030, and reducing emissions to zero by 2050.
Dr Peter Nuttall, from the University of South Pacific, described the initiative an adaptation and resilience measure, to help Pacific countries transition shipping to a low carbon industry.
