A South Korean-flagged longline fishing vessel was charged on Friday with five counts of fishing in Marshall Islands waters without a valid license.

The vessel monitoring system (VMS), an onboard computer system that provides real-time positioning of a fishing vessel by satellite to island fisheries departments, provided the basis for the fisheries department in the Marshall Islands to investigate and charge the vessel, the Oryong 721, with illegal fishing.

Shipping has been given a glimpse of a new wind-assisted future with the first ship travelling kitted out with eConowind’s Ventifoils in the Netherlands.

The Ankie, a 3,600 dwt general cargo vessel, belonging to Jan van Dam Shipping has been retrofitted with the the wind rotors at Royal Niestern Sander shipyard and is now operating in the North Sea with its owner claiming the technology is “economically feasible” and will likely be installed on planned newbuilds.
