The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the five UN regional commissions have launched a project to help governments and businesses to keep transport networks and borders operational and facilitate the flow of goods and services, while minimizing the spread of COVID-19.

The project, launched in May, will implement UN solutions, standards, guidelines, metrics, tools, and methodologies to help developing countries build transport, trade, and logistics resilience in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The project emphasizes the exchange of knowledge and good practices, and aims to help governments in developing and least developed countries (LDCs) to adapt to post-COVID-19 conditions using UN expertise, standards, tools, and guidance, while taking their local conditions into account.

Proposed at the 1992 Earth Summit and officially recognized by the UN in 2008, World Oceans Day is a celebration of our shared ocean. On a planet that is mostly water, we are very reliant on the ocean, yet we can easily forget about the issues affecting it when we spend most of our time on solid ground.

World Oceans Day aims to increase the public’s ocean literacy, this year with a focus on the theme ‘Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean.’ World Oceans Day also shines a light on SDG 14 (life below water). The SDGs point to the interlinkages among  a truly sustainable Earth and ocean health.

Ammonia and hydrogen are the most viable long-term options for shipping, according to shipowners, many of whom say they have no decarbonisation strategies in place.

Almost 60% of shipowners see hydrogen and ammonia as the best long-term fuel options, a survey by the ABS showed.

“When asked which fuel is most likely to be adopted in the near term, 70% selected fuels in the light gas pathway, which includes liquefied natural gas in the short term and hydrogen as a future solution,” ABS said in a statement.
