Norwegian companies, HeidelbergCement and Felleskjøpet Agri, are now putting forth a call for bids to deliver bulk carrier designs entirely operating upon zero emissions technology. 

The two companies are supporting the Norwegian national mission to move more goods by sea, and through with long-term contracts, have determined a zero-emission bulk carrier will be viable over the coming 30 years.

The Norwegian Research Council is utilizing $2.05m in funding through Knutsen OAS Shipping, Eidesvik Offshore, Repsol, Wärtsilä and the Sustainable Energy Catapult Centre to provide important input to the development of regulations for the use of ammonia and other low-carbon fuels through an ammonia-driven fuel cell to be tested on the Eidesvik Offshore supply vessel, Viking Energy.

Climate Action Tracker has been evaluating policy commitments and action across governments globally, and their most recent report finds the shipping sector likely to exceed its own 2030 climate target and LNG is not an acceptable transition fuel. Emissions are forecast to at least double over the 2015-2050 period, and COVID-19-related reductions due to restrictions on travel and economic contraction do not represent a systemic alteration of emission trends.

This also applies to the aviation sector. High Ambition across UNFCCC, IMO, and ICAO commitments fall short of the 1.5 degree target the High Ambition Coalition nations of the Pacific require for survival.
